This outdoor daybed swing is designed for ultimate relaxation on a screened-in porch, offering a sturdy and functional seating solution with a “floating on a cloud” sensation. Measuring 52” x 28”, it accommodates two adults comfortably, with space for a third if needed, and is built around a standard crib mattress for cushioning.
Commissioned by my best friend’s in-law’s as a Christmas gift for my friend and his wife, the project demanded discretion due to their frequent visits to The Shop, especially during the holiday season. Constructed in secret and installed on Christmas Eve morning after they left town, the swing was revealed to them via photos on Christmas morning, becoming a cherished addition to their home.
The swing is crafted from cedar wood, selected for its durability and light weight. The frame is fine-sanded, stained with Minwax “Golden Oak,” and sealed with multiple coats of Minwax Polycrylic “Clear Satin” for weather resistance and a polished finish. It is suspended using 1-inch thick twisted manila rope, secured through an innovative design where each of the four main posts conceals a void for the rope to pass through, anchored with knots at the base for efficient structural support. Oversized stainless steel cup holders are integrated into each armrest, allowing enjoyment of any beverage without worry of spilling while swinging.
The construction features half-lap joints at the corners and dado joints with dowels for the vertical slats, ensuring concealed joinery while maintaining robust structural strength. Inspired by Pinterest designs but original in its execution, the swing was completed over 51 hours, reflecting meticulous attention to detail.
